For portals are a sentient magic. They perceive. If the desire to pass is absent, they will deny the traveller access. On occasion, a traveller may even be called—though this is rare. For intentions and desires are the key to traversing between worlds.

LOCKED SCROLL 34

BROCH OF THE ANCIENTS

ABERNETHY, SCOTLAND

I walked out of my bedroom to sunlight spilling through the living room window. The blanket and pillow lay untouched on the couch where I’d put them out for Arlan’s return the previous evening. I sat on the couch beside them and picked up his pillow, placing it against my cheek and inhaling his scent—musky male.

Cold swirled around in my stomach. He would’ve found some shelter overnight. He was a warrior, a soldier, and therefore used to harsh conditions. Right?

I pushed the pillow away and stowed the unused bedding, then dressed, all the time keeping one ear out for Arlan’s return. I prepared to leave for work, the cottage watching me in silence. I walked to the backdoor and stopped. His big mean-looking sword still sat by the umbrella stand, its pommel a round, intricate knot. I rested my hand on it, then curling my fingers around its grip, I lifted. His prolonged grasp had smoothed the leather-bound handle. I withdrew it from the scabbard, and it sung. The sword was heavy in my hand, with faint scratches on the blade but no dints along the edges.

I held it to the morning light, and it gleamed in a ripple pattern, its edges shiny sharp, revealing markings along the flat of the blade. It looked like Ogham script and the words ran along the thickest section of the blade.

My breath brushed past my hand. “Wonder what that says.”
